Faithful Reflections: The Cost of Discipleship
Counting the Cost of Following Jesus
Story
Jesus told the crowd that anyone who wanted to follow Him must count the cost. He compared it to a man building a tower: before laying the foundation, he would first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he could finish. Otherwise, people would laugh at him for starting and not completing it. In the same way, a king would consider whether he had enough soldiers before going to war. Jesus made it clear—discipleship requires total surrender.
Luke 14:27–28 says:
"And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?"
Following Jesus is free, yet it costs us everything.
Insight
Discipleship is not half-hearted—it requires commitment, sacrifice, and faithfulness. Jesus never promised an easy road, but He promised it would be worth it. The cost may be comfort, relationships, or personal ambitions, but the reward is eternal life and the joy of walking closely with Him.
Matthew 16:24–25 reminds us:
"Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it."
The cost is great, but the treasure of knowing Christ is greater.
Prayer
Lord, help me to count the cost of following You and not shrink back. Give me strength to surrender what holds me back and courage to take up my cross daily. Remind me that no sacrifice is too great compared to the joy of being Yours. Amen.
Daily Verse
"I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord."
