Faithful Reflections: The Rich Man and Lazarus
Eternal Consequences of Earthly Choices
Story
Jesus told of a rich man who lived in luxury every day. At his gate lay Lazarus, a poor man covered in sores, longing to eat the scraps from the rich man’s table. When both died, Lazarus was carried by angels to Abraham’s side, while the rich man found himself in torment. From his place of suffering, the rich man begged for relief and for Lazarus to warn his family. But Abraham replied that they already had the law and the prophets—if they did not listen to them, they would not be convinced, even if someone rose from the dead.
Luke 16:25 says:
"But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.’"
This story reminds us that earthly status does not determine eternal destiny.
Insight
The parable contrasts temporary wealth with eternal reality. The rich man’s sin was not his wealth but his indifference—ignoring the suffering at his doorstep. Lazarus’ name means “God helps,” and indeed, God was his comfort in the end. Jesus teaches us that how we live now—especially how we treat others—has eternal significance.
Matthew 25:40 reminds us:
"Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me."
Compassion in this life echoes into eternity.
Prayer
Lord, open my eyes to the needs around me, and protect me from selfishness and indifference. Teach me to live with eternity in mind, using what You’ve given me to love others and honor You. May my life reflect compassion that brings glory to Your name. Amen.
Daily Verse
"Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share."
—1 Timothy 6:18
