Faithful Reflections: The Unforgiving Servant
Forgiven Much, Called to Forgive Much
Story
Jesus told of a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. One servant owed him an impossible debt—so large it could never be repaid. The king forgave the debt entirely. But that same servant went out and found a fellow servant who owed him a small amount. Instead of showing mercy, he demanded payment and had the man thrown into prison. When the king heard of this, he was furious and handed the unforgiving servant over to be punished, saying that mercy should be shown as it was received.
Matthew 18:32–33 says:
"Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’"
God’s mercy toward us should flow through us to others.
Insight
We often want God’s forgiveness for ourselves but struggle to extend it to others. Yet the gap between what others owe us and what God has forgiven us is immeasurable. This parable reminds us that forgiveness is not optional for believers—it’s a direct response to the grace we’ve received.
Ephesians 4:32 reminds us:
"Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."
Forgiven people should be forgiving people.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for the great mercy You’ve shown me. When I am tempted to hold onto bitterness or resentment, remind me of the debt You have canceled in my life. Give me the grace to forgive as freely and fully as You have forgiven me. Amen.
Daily Verse
"For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you."
—Matthew 6:14
