Faithful Reflections: The Pharisee and the Tax Collector
Humility Over Pride in Prayer
Story
Jesus told of two men who went to the temple to pray. The Pharisee stood proudly, thanking God that he was not like other people—robbers, evildoers, or even the tax collector nearby. He boasted about his fasting and tithing. But the tax collector stood at a distance, not even looking up to heaven. He beat his chest and prayed, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” Jesus said the tax collector, not the Pharisee, went home justified before God.
Luke 18:14 says:
"For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."
God honors humility, not self-righteousness.
Insight
This parable reminds us that true prayer is not about comparing ourselves to others or boasting of our goodness. It’s about coming before God with honesty and humility. Pride closes the door to mercy, but humility opens it wide. We are justified not by what we do, but by God’s grace in response to a repentant heart.
Psalm 51:17 says:
"My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise."
Humility draws us closer to God than any outward display of religion.
Prayer
Lord, protect me from pride and self-righteousness. Teach me to approach You with humility, honesty, and a repentant heart. Thank You for Your mercy that justifies me—not because of who I am, but because of who You are. Amen.
Daily Verse
"Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up."
