Self-Care Lesson
Self-care isn't escaping reality or wishing life were different. It's learning to understand where you are, accept what you cannot control, and intentionally choose the next step toward the life you want. Growth begins not by trying harder, but by seeing more clearly.
A few years ago, I found myself reflecting on life and asking a difficult question:
"How did I get here?"
Not because everything was bad, but because it wasn't what I had imagined.
Some dreams had changed. Some opportunities had passed. Some decisions had opened new doors, while others quietly closed them. There were victories I celebrated, disappointments I never expected, and chapters I would never have chosen for myself.
I wasn't just comparing my life to someone else's.
I was comparing it to the life I thought I would have.
That's when these words came to mind:
"Torn between what is and what could be."
A little later, another thought followed:
"Hard to write my story when my story is writing me."
Together, these two statements describe one of life's greatest tensions.
We all have a picture of what life could be—a healthier body, stronger relationships, financial stability, meaningful work, greater peace, or simply becoming the person we know we're capable of becoming.
Then there's what is.
Our current reality.
Sometimes those two pictures look very different.
That space between where we are today and where we hope to be is what I call the gap.
The gap isn't failure.
It's simply the distance between your current reality and your desired future.
More importantly, the gap isn't there to discourage you. It's there to reveal what needs to grow. Sometimes the greatest obstacle isn't the distance itself—it's believing the distance can never change.
Almost everyone is living somewhere inside that gap.
Understanding the Gap
The gap doesn't exist for just one reason.
Sometimes it's created by the choices we've made.
Sometimes by the choices we've avoided.
Sometimes by habits we've developed over years.
And sometimes by circumstances we never saw coming.
Maybe fear kept you from taking a chance.
Maybe comfort kept you from making a needed change.
Maybe pride prevented an important conversation.
Maybe self-doubt convinced you that you weren't capable.
Or maybe life happened.
An illness.
A job loss.
Financial hardship.
Family responsibilities.
The decisions of someone else.
Some obstacles are chosen.
Some are given.
Both shape our journey.
The goal isn't to determine whether life or your choices created the gap.
The goal is to understand where you are today so you can decide where to go next.
Because clarity helps us stop asking,
"Why am I here?"
and start asking,
"Where do I go from here?"
What Can We Actually Control?
One of the greatest sources of stress is trying to control things that were never ours to control.
We cannot control:
yesterday
other people's decisions
timing
rejection
unexpected events
every outcome
But we can control:
today's decisions
our attitude
our habits
our response
our effort
our willingness to grow
Peace begins when we stop carrying responsibilities that were never ours and start investing our energy where it can actually make a difference.
Growth begins when we take ownership of the things that are ours to change.
The more clearly we see the difference, the more energy we have to invest where it actually matters.
Our Story Is Also Writing Us
We often think we're writing our story through the choices we make.
And we are.
But something else is happening at the same time.
Our story is writing us.
Every choice writes the next chapter, but every chapter also shapes the person holding the pen.
Every disappointment teaches something.
Every difficult relationship stretches something.
Every setback reveals something.
Every victory strengthens something.
The circumstances we face are not only shaping our lives—they're shaping our character.
That doesn't mean we have to like every chapter.
But every chapter has the opportunity to leave us wiser, stronger, more compassionate, and more resilient than before.
Sometimes the greatest growth isn't changing the story.
It's allowing the story to change us.
Your Growth Toolbox
Growth rarely happens because life suddenly changes.
More often, it happens because we begin changing how we respond to life.
Once we understand the gap, we can begin closing it—not through one giant leap, but through intentional daily choices.
Clarity
Be honest about where you are today and where you want to be. You can't move toward a destination you haven't clearly defined.
Courage
Take the first uncomfortable step. Growth almost always begins outside your comfort zone.
Consistency
Small actions repeated over time create lasting change. One better decision today is more powerful than waiting for the perfect tomorrow.
Resilience
Expect setbacks. They aren't proof you've failed—they're part of the journey. Keep moving forward.
Grace
Don't expect perfection from yourself. Growth is rarely a straight line. Learn, adjust, and keep going.
As you reflect on your own journey, ask yourself:
Where am I today?
Where do I truly want to be?
What obstacles are within my control?
What do I need to release because I cannot control it?
What is one step I can take today to begin closing the gap?
Life isn't asking you to control every chapter. It's asking you to be intentional with the page you're on.
Because the distance between what is and what could be isn't crossed all at once.
It's crossed one intentional choice at a time.
Please don’t hesitate to pass this on to anyone who may find it valuable.
